I became obsessed with chili lime seasoning when I lived in Mexico. Especially Tajin. But unless you have a Costco membership, Tajin is surprisingly expensive in the US!

I decided to recreate it at home for a fraction of the cost. It’s so easy to make and you really only need a handful of easy-to-find ingredients!

Why You’ll Love It

  • Big flavor in seconds. Just sprinkle it on and boom—flavor explosion.
  • Customizable heat. Like it spicier? Add more cayenne. Prefer it mild? Dial it back.
  • Simple pantry ingredients. No fancy stuff, just real spices you probably already have.
  • Endlessly versatile. Sweet, savory, or somewhere in between—this seasoning works everywhere.

Ingredient Notes

Here’s what goes into this bold, zesty blend:

  • Chili powder: The base of the mix. Warm, earthy, and just the right amount of smoky heat.
  • Cayenne pepper: Brings the fire! Feel free to adjust to your heat preference.
  • Paprika: Adds a rich depth and a hint of sweetness. Smoked paprika is especially nice here if you have it!
  • Sea salt: Balances the spice and brings all the flavors together.
  • Citric acid: This is what gives it that tangy lime-like zing. I found mine in the canning aisle of my local grocery store. If you don’t have it, see the FAQ below for a quick swap.

Serving Suggestions

This chili lime seasoning adds serious flavor wherever you need it! A few ideas:

  • Sprinkle on fruit like mango, watermelon, or pineapple for a sweet-tangy-spicy combo. It’s great even on crunchy veggies like in this tajin cucumber recipe.
  • Dust over popcorn for a bold movie-night snack.
  • Toss with roasted chickpeas or nuts for a crunchy, addictive treat.
  • Season grilled veggies or tofu for a smoky, zippy finish.
  • Sprinkle on avocado toast or salads for a flavor upgrade.
  • Use as a rimming salt for margaritas—yes, please!

FAQs

What can I use instead of citric acid?

If you’re using the seasoning right away, a squeeze of fresh lime or lemon juice works great. Just don’t store the mix with fresh juice added—it shortens the shelf life.

Is this too spicy?

It’s not super spicy, but it does have a gentle kick! If you’re sensitive, reduce or omit the cayenne.

Can I make a bigger batch?

Absolutely. Just scale up the recipe and store the extra in a sealed container. You’ll be glad you did.
