What is tartar sauce?

Tartar sauce, also spelled tartare sauce, originated in France. It’s a creamy condiment most often served with fried seafood dishes.

It’s main ingredient is either mayonnaise or aioli and is seasoned with pickles, dill and other seasonings.

Why this recipe works

Mayonnaise is made with eggs but there are several vegan versions available in stores now. They are usually made with oil so to make this oil free I chose a different creamy base.

Here I used an unsweetened dairy-free yogurt as my creamy base and added flavors to make it more like mayonnaise. It is not as thick as typical tartar sauce but still full of flavor.

The combination of herbs and pickles makes this creamy condiment the perfect dip full of flavor and the yogurt makes it a healthier option!

If you’re not oil-free, feel free to use your favorite vegan mayo instead. This is one of my favorite vegan mayos .

You’re going to love this vegan tartar sauce!

It’s:

  • creamy and tangy

The lemon juice and apple cider vinegar help to make the yogurt taste more like mayonnaise. If you’re using vegan mayo, feel free to omit. However, it you like your tartar sauce more tangy, feel free to include it still!
