Ingredients and Substitutions
- Ground coffee OR instant coffee: Whether you’re using a coffee machine, French press, or Moka pot, make sure to choose the right grind size for your brewing method. If you have neither of those, you can use instant coffee and mix it with 2 tbsp boiling water.
- Unsweetened almond milk: I recommend using barista-style, as it’s thicker and creamier than regular almond milk.
- Pure maple syrup (optional): For sweetening your almond milk latte based on your personal preference. Feel free to use granulated or cane sugar if that’s what you have on hand, or try this yummy apple honey.
- Vanilla extract (optional): For making a vanilla latte.
- Ice cubes (optional): For making an iced almond milk latte.
For exact measurements and details, check out the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Flavor Variations
- Matcha latte: Replace the coffee with 1 1/2 teaspoons of matcha powder and whisk it with hot water. If you don’t have a matcha whisk, check out my article on how to make matcha without a whisk.
- Cinnamon maple latte: Add 1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup with a dash of cinnamon to the brewed coffee and mix.
- Mocha latte: Stir 1 tablespoon of brown sugar or coconut sugar and 1-2 teaspoon of cocoa powder into the coffee. Then, prepare using your preferred method, either hot or iced.
- Caramel latte: Add 1 tablespoon of vegan caramel sauce to the warm brewed coffee and whisk it until it dissolves.
- Pumpkin spice: Add 1/4 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice to the milk and whisk it until it dissolves.
- Chai Latte: Similar to my matcha chai latte, replace half of the milk with brewed chai tea.
How to Make an Almond Milk Latte
First thing first, you need to prepare the coffee. You’ll need 1-2 shots of espresso, depending on how strong you like your coffee.
Here are three ways you can do that at home:
- With a coffee machine: Grind fresh espresso beans finely and tamp them firmly into the portafilter. Insert the portafilter and extract the espresso under pressure for about 25-30 seconds.
- With a French press: Add ground coffee to the press and pour hot water over it. Let it steep for 4 minutes, then press down the plunger slowly. Pour the brewed coffee into a cup.
- With a moka pot: Fill the bottom chamber with water up to the safety valve. Insert the filter basket and fill it with ground coffee, leveling it without pressing down. Screw on the top chamber tightly and place on medium-low heat on the stovetop. When the coffee starts to brew, lower the heat to avoid over-extraction.
How To Make an Iced Almond Milk Latte
Once your coffee is ready, you can assemble your iced latte. Add ice cubes to a tall glass and pour the freshly brewed coffee. Top with almond milk and enjoy!
How To Make a Hot Latte
To make a hot latte, first heat and froth your almond milk. You can do that by either using the frother attachment on your espresso machine or a saucepan and milk frother.
Make sure the almond milk isn’t hotter than 140-150°F (60-65°C) or it can give your coffee a burned-after taste.
Once the milk is frothed, you’re ready to assemble. To a large glass, add the hot coffee first, then pour the frothed almond milk on top. Serve right away!
Tips
- Use barista almond milk for best results. Regular almond milk can separate so to avoid that it’s best to use barista almond milk, which is thicker and creamier.
- Make sure your milk isn’t hotter than 140-150°F (60-65°C). Any hotter than that and it can make your coffee taste burned.
- Don’t have a coffee machine? You can still froth your milk! Either add your warm milk to a pot and use a milk frother OR add the warm milk to a sealed jar and shake vigorously. Alternatively, you can also froth your milk with an immersion blender.
- If you like strong coffee, you can make your own coffee ice cubes. This way your coffee won’t get watered down as the ice melts. A true game changer!

- Flat white: Similar to a latte but with a higher ratio of espresso to milk and with very little foam.
- Frapuccino: Blend the almond milk with brewed coffee and ice cubes until smooth and creamy.

Almond Milk Latte
Ingredients
- 2-4 shots of espresso or 3/4 cup coffee
- 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
Optional:
- 2-3 teaspoons maple syrup or coconut sugar
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- ground cinnamon or cocoa powder for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the espresso or coffee with your preferred method. If using a sweetener, stir it into the hot espresso at this time to evenly dissolve and disperse it. You can also add the vanilla extract at this time if using.
For a hot latte:
- If you have an espresso machine with a wand attachment, you can heat and froth the almond milk that way. Otherwise, heat the almond milk in a saucepan or in the microwave until hot but not boiling.
- Use an electric milk frother, whisk, or blender to create foam if desired.
- Pour the hot espresso or coffee into mugs. Then, slowly pour the hot almond milk over the espresso, holding back any foam with a spoon. Spoon the foam on top of the lattes.
- Sprinkle with cinnamon or cocoa powder to your liking and serve!
For an iced latte:
- Place your espresso or coffee in the fridge for 5-10 minutes to cool so that it doesn’t melt the ice right away.
- Fill a tall glass with ice cubes. Pour the cooled espresso over the ice cubes in the glass, then pour in the almond milk. Use a long spoon to stir the iced latte until well combined.
- Sprinkle with cinnamon or cocoa powder on top for a finishing touch if desired and serve immediately.
