What is a Virgin Piña Colada?
Also called a Piña Colada Mocktail, this is a non-alcoholic version of the traditional beverage, which is the national drink of Puerto Rico. It consists of frozen pineapple, coconut milk, pineapple juice, and optionally a sweetener like agave or maple syrup.
While the classic pina colada has white rum in it, this one omits it entirely, making it perfect to share with family and kids.

Ingredients & Substitutions
- Frozen pineapple: You can either cut up fresh pineapple and freeze it in a zip-log bag or use frozen pineapple chunks for convenience.
- Pineapple juice: Use 100% pineapple juice free of refined sugars and other additives for the best result. You can also use coconut water instead.
- Maple syrup: For sweetening your mocktail. You can also use agave syrup or granulated sugar instead.
- Coconut milk: It’s best to use coconut milk from a can — full-fat will give you richer results, but light coconut milk can also work. You can also use coconut cream or cream of coconut. Unsweetened coconut cream is the thick and rich part that rises to the top when coconut milk is left to sit. On the other hand, cream of coconut is a syrup made with coconut cream and sugar and it’s mainly used to sweeten drinks and desserts. Omit the sweetener if using cream of coconut.
- Lime juice: For adding acidity and tanginess to the mocktail.
- Ice cubes: Add more or less depending on how thick/thin you like your drink to be.

How To Make Pina Colada Mocktail
Step 1: To a high-speed blender, add all of the ingredients, starting with the liquids first.
Step 2: Blend on high for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until completely smooth and no pineapple chunks remain.
Adjust the consistency if needed, adding more pineapple juice to thin it out or more ice cubes to thicken it.
Step 3: Serve right away in glasses and top with maraschino cherries if desired!
Tips
- Use a good blender that’s powerful. This ensures a smooth and creamy texture, free of ice and pineapple chunks.
- Start with cold ingredients. If you want to serve this mocktail right away, it’s best to start with chilled pineapple juice and coconut milk.
- Adjust the sweetness to taste. Add more or less maple syrup depending on how sweet you like your drink.
- Adjust the consistency to taste. Add more ice cubes for a thicker Piña Colada, and less for a thinner one.
- Use full-fat coconut milk. Just like in my coconut shake recipe, the higher the percentage of fat in your milk, the thicker and richer your mocktail will be.
