    • Made with 3 simple ingredients: Take this recipe as a base and feel free to add any additional fruits or toppings that you like. I've left some recommendations below.
    • Creamy and delicious: Thanks to a few tips and tricks that I'm sharing with you today, you can make a thick and creamy milkshake at any time, even without ice cream!
    • Vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free: This strawberry banana milkshake recipe is suitable for people with dairy or gluten allergies or those following a vegan diet.

    Ingredient notes

Gathered ingredients for making strawberry banana milkshake.
    • Fresh strawberries: You can use any type of berries or fresh fruit such as raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries.
    • Frozen banana: I recommend using frozen bananas over fresh because they play a key role in the texture of this strawberry banana milkshake.
    • Non-dairy milk: You can use any type of non-dairy milk such as soy milk, almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk, etc.
    • Non-dairy ice cream (optional): For best results, use high-quality vanilla or strawberry ice cream. You can also substitute it with a scoop or two of coconut cream.
    • Ice cubes: If you're not using ice cream, I highly recommend adding some ice to thicken the milkshake and make it cold.

For exact measurements of the ingredients, check out the recipe card at the end of the post.

How to make this strawberry banana milkshake

To a high-speed blender, add strawberries, frozen bananas, non-dairy milk, and vegan ice cream (if using). If the ice cream is too hard to scoop, leave it at room temperature for 1-2 minutes.

Not using ice cream? Add ice cubes instead.

Ingredients for vegan milkshake added to a blender jar.

Blend on high speed for 1-2 minutes, until your strawberry banana milkshake is completely smooth and creamy.

Taste and adjust the sweetness or the consistency if needed. For a thicker milkshake, add more banana or ice cream.

For a thinner milkshake, add more non-dairy milk.

Pour into a serving glass and serve right away!

I like to top it off with coconut whipped cream but feel free to add any of your favorite toppings. Coconut shavings or strawberry or banana slices would be delicious too!

    Top Tips

    • Use a frozen banana: This gives the milkshake a thick and creamy texture, and it also makes it cold and refreshing. Make sure to use overripe bananas to add natural sweetness.
    • For the best flavor, use strawberries when they're in season: They're sweeter, juicy, and taste so much better! It's a key step if you want to make an amazing milkshake. If you don't have access to fresh seasonal strawberries, it's better to use frozen strawberries instead.
    • Use a high-speed blender: This will ensure that all of the fruits are blended and the milkshake is completely smooth without adding too much liquid.
    • Adjust the sweetness as needed: The best part about making milkshakes at home is that you get to decide how sweet you want them to be! You can add more or less ice cream, depending on your personal preferences. Or if you're making this recipe without ice cream, you can add 1-2 tablespoons of maple syrup or another sweetener of your choice.

    FAQs

Is a strawberry banana milkshake good for you?

This milkshake is high in vitamin C, fiber, potassium, antioxidants, and more! It can be a great addition to a healthy diet. Note that if you're adding ice cream to your milkshake, it adds refined sugars and fat, which should be consumed in moderation.

What is the difference between a smoothie and a milkshake?

Milkshakes usually have ice cream and whole milk or heavy cream in them, while smoothies are just blended fruits and/or vegetables with yogurt, nuts, and other healthy ingredients.

Can I make this recipe without a blender?

Yes, you can make milkshakes by using an immersion blender. Make sure to chop the ingredient into small pieces and add them to a large bowl. Purée everything until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy.

How do I thicken my milkshake?

You can make this strawberry banana milkshake thicker by adding more of the ingredients you've already used. This could be one more frozen banana or a few extra strawberries, a few more ice cubes or one more scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Milkshake served in a glass and topped with coconut whipped cream.

    Variations

Take this recipe as a base and add any of your favorite ingredients and flavorings. Here are some ways you can customize it:

    • Protein powder: Add 1 scoop of your favorite vegan protein powder to bump up the nutrition of this strawberry banana milkshake.
    • Cocoa powder: Are you a chocolate lover? Adding a few tablespoons of cocoa powder can give this recipe a delicious chocolaty flavor.
    • Nut butter: You can add 1-2 tablespoons of your favorite nut butter like peanut butter, cashew butter, almond butter, etc. This will add a nutty flavor and creaminess to the milkshake.
    • Spices: A dash of ground cinnamon, cardamom, or nutmeg would be a lovely addition.
    • Vanilla extract: If you're not using ice cream, you can add more flavor to your milkshake by adding 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract.
    • Strawberry syrup: To add even more strawberry flavor, add 1-2 teaspoons of strawberry syrup.
    • Make it without bananas: No bananas? No problem! For every 1 banana, use 1 cup of frozen cubed mango instead.

    Storage

This creamy strawberry banana milkshake is best served right after it's made, but it can also be stored in a jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

Note that the milkshake becomes watery the longer it sits because the fruits and ice cream start to thaw out.
