Ingredient notes
Two simple ingredients are all you need for this delicious recipe:
Fresh strawberries—If presentation matters, try to choose strawberries that are of about the same size. Otherwise, just pick out the ripest strawberries you can find. The riper, the sweeter, which will pair perfectly with chocolate.
Dairy-free chocolate—Dark chocolate chips or dark chocolate bars are typically vegan, but make sure to check the ingredient label to be sure. Cocoa butter is not actually dairy derived, it’s an oil extracted from the cocoa bean, so don’t be alarmed when you see it listed in the ingredients. Enjoy Life makes vegan chocolate chips that you can find at most grocery stores.
This is the easiest way to make vegan chocolate covered strawberries—no coconut oil needed! The melted chocolate will easily harden at room temperature without it, but if you’d like a thinner chocolate shell, you can add a little coconut oil to your melted chocolate.
How to make vegan chocolate covered strawberries
This easy recipe is so simple and has just four quick steps.
Step 1: Wash strawberries in a colander with cold water to remove and dirt. Transfer to a paper towel to dry thoroughly.
Step 2: Prepare the non-dairy chocolate chips by microwave or double boiler method. For the microwave, add the chocolate to a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 30-second increments, stirring in between until fully melted. Avoid burning the chocolate by stirring the last few chunks until smooth.
Step 3: Prep a drying rack with parchment or wax paper below it to catch and drips. One at a time, hold the top of each strawberry and dip the strawberries into the melted chocolate. Allow excess chocolate to drip off before transferring to the drying rack. Continue with the rest of the strawberries.
Step 4: If desired, add a chocolate drizzle. Use whatever leftover chocolate is in the bottom of the bowl and quickly drizzle it over the chocolate coating in a zigzag pattern using a spoon or fork. Allow to dry for a few minutes before serving.
Top Tips
Make sure the strawberries are completely dry before dipping. Any moisture will prevent the melted chocolate from sticking properly.
Avoid touching the dipped strawberries until they’re fully dry before transferring to your serving platter or storing. That way the smooth coating doesn’t get messed up.
How to store
These vegan chocolate-covered strawberries are best enjoyed the same day they’re prepared but they can also be made ahead of time. Make sure when serving to place them out of direct sunlight or they may start to melt.
Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Serve cold or at room temperature.
Serving Suggestions
If you’re planning to serve these vegan chocolate covered strawberries for a Valentine’s Day edible gift or date night dessert, add them to a cute box with parchment paper, or pop them on some skewers and arrange in a bouquet. This is a fun and more affordable Edible Arrangements option!
Topping Ideas
If you want to get a little more adventurous with your toppings, there’s plenty of creative options to add! Here are some of my favorites:
- Coconut flakes
- Vegan sprinkles
- Chopped nuts
- Crushed pretzels
- Peanut butter or almond butter—Drizzle over the chocolate strawberries just like you would with the melted chocolate.
When adding these toppings you can either sprinkle them over the dipped strawberries, or add them to bowls and dip the strawberries in the toppings after the chocolate. Either way, add the toppings while the chocolate is still wet for best results.
FAQ’s
No, chocolate covered strawberries do not freeze well since the strawberries will become mushy upon thawing. They are best stored in the refrigerator.
